Seoul Express is an artist duo, Minki Hong and Youjin Jeon, collaborating since 2015. They create an integrated image by combining various media like sound, music, moving image, movement, physical materials and using new media technologies.
Their works have been presented in many forms such as installation, performance, film, 2D image and music. They try not to limit their work to the specific genre and they are interested in exploring each media’s properties and situating it out of its properties. Music beyond the temporal scale, non-static object transcending spatial dimension and performance with non-linear narrative can be their interests. They keep experimenting a variety of media composition and are concerned with juxtapositions of the tangible and intangible.
Minki Hong studied film-making and worked as a producer of various films and documentaries such as ‘
City:Hall(2013, Korea).’ Youjin Jeon is a sound artist and studied computer science and computer music. She started her career as an electric guitar player and film composer. She wrote music for films, TV drama and commercials in Korea. Since 2011 they have expanded their artistic practice into contemporary art by presenting installations and experimental performances.
By taking their artistic languages, professional skills and techniques accumulated in film industry, they have created artworks merged with aural and visual elements and collaborated with many kinds of artists including actors, musicians, dancers and choreographers. Their works are mainly accompanied by diverse technologies like projection, image/sound processing, sound design, music composition and physical computing. And they develop their own tools, devices and computing system to control multimedia and share the experiences and technologies through numerous workshops.
Seoul Express has focused on individual lives of city and people’s performativity to explore what surrounds us and how our society works. They placed people’s specific actions in social context to figure out our society with a micro-perspective. In 2016, they curated the project ‘Unlanguaged Seoul’ supported by an artist support project of
SFAC. They presented an artwork with the same name that shows a choir performance with multi-channel to express multi-faceted and complex images of the contemporary city like Seoul.
각자 음악과 영화의 영역에서 활동해온 두 명의 아티스트로 구성된 서울익스프레스는 음악, 영상의 요소를 미술이라는 영역에 부차적인 존재로 차용하는 것이 아니라, 서로의 기법과 언어를 적극적으로 가져와서 조형적 요소와 긴밀하게 결합하고 총체적인 이미지를 만드는 것에 주목한다. 또한 다양한 기술과 직접 개발한 장치를 작품에 활용하며, 청각적 요소를 시각적 요소만큼이나 중요한 위치에 놓는다. 2016년 발표한 ‘언랭귀지드 서울’은 합창이라는 극적인 요소를 부각시켜 현대 도시가 지닌 다면적이고 복합적인 모습을 직관적 이미지로 표현하였다. 2017년 ‘패치워크’ 작업을 통해 개인의 사적인 경험을 사회적 맥락에 위치시킴으로써 사회를 거시적 관점이 아닌 미시적인 행위와 과정의 결과물로 보여주고자 했다.
서울익스프레스의 전유진은 컴퓨터공학과 컴퓨터음악을 전공하고, 다수의 상업영화에 작사, 작곡, 연주자로 활동해왔다. 2011년부터 사운드, 음악, 기술을 기반으로 한 멀티미디어작품을 전시와 공연의 형태로 발표하면서 사운드아트 영역으로 작업을 확장해왔다. 2014년 서울시립미술관 신진작가전시지원으로 첫번째 개인전을 열었고 서울익스프레스를 결성하여 ‘언랭귀지드 서울’ 프로젝트 등 국제교류예술프로젝트 및 뉴미디어전시, 다원예술공연 등을 기획/창작하고 있다. 활동 초기부터 기술과 예술이 결합된 워크숍, 교육프로그램 등을 만들고 실행해왔으며, 2017년 여성을 위한 열린 기술랩을 결성하여 기술문화의 다양성을 높이기 위해 강연, 워크숍, 포럼 등 여러 시도들을 이어가고 있다. 2018년부터 국립극단 어린이청소년극연구소와 함께 영유아를 대상으로 하는 공연 연구를 진행하였고 2019년 '꿈은 나의 현실'을 발표하였다.
홍민기는 영화연출을 전공한 뒤, 독일, 일본과의 합작영화를 공동기획, 제작하고 다큐멘터리 프로듀서로 활동해왔다. 2013년부터 다수의 전시, 공연 등에 참여하며 활동의 영역을 넓혀왔으며, 음악, 설치미술, 무용 등에 내러티브를 결합한 다원예술 작품을 만들고있다. 최근에는 드라마트루기로서 안무가, 무용수와의 협업을 시도했으며, 연출작으로 '언랭귀지드 서울', '춤추고 노래하며', '패치워크', '붉은 카네이션' '인더스트리얼 퍼포먼스' 등이 있다. 2019년 6명의 안무가와 협업한 개인 프로젝트 '정원 속의 포켓몬'을 전시로 발표하였고 이와 연장된 주제로 2020년 프로젝트 '미끄러진 기호들(가제)'의 창작 연구를 진행 중이다.
